Connect.ed Modules

Well, it has taken me weeks to get to this and I have finally found time to sit down and write about the Connect.ed modules. I find it so important that we teach children how to be cyber smart in order to keep themselves safe whilst online. These modules really resonated with me as I have a 14 year old step daughter as well as our 6 and 3 year old’s who need to be taught how to be cyber smart in this technology world.

Prac has begun……

After having so much anticipation on Monday night about what prac would be like and reading Melissa’s post I now feel very relieved that it has begun.

Well…..here I am reporting on my first two days of prac. I have an excellent mentor teacher, I could not ask for anything more. She is very supportive and has an extremely organised classroom where the children follow the behaviour management system to a T.

My first day yesterday was set aside as an observation day however my mentor teacher decided at lunch time that I should take the afternoon science lesson, it was on the different ways animals move. I was super nervous but knew I had to just get in and do it. The classroom has an interactive whiteboard which I just love.

Today I taught a Maths lesson on equal sharing and an art lesson which was lots of fun and the kids were really engaged.

The days go so fast and I feel as though I am always running out of time at the end of each lesson. I have planned my lessons for tomorrow and Friday and I know what I need to plan for before next week too.

Also, I have had some exposure to so great new resources and a really practical way to plan.

Assignment 3

Today I actually sat down and have tried to do my preparation essay for Assignment 3 and have decided I need to wait till I begin professional experience. I need to find out a lot more about my school and the children and also what I will be teaching. This is difficult as I wanted to have some things complete before I start on Tuesday. I am going to be up very late every night during prac.

I really enjoyed reading Lynette’s Blog post. This post refers to a documentary of a first year teacher who is teaching grade 1. It was great to have a look at it.

I went for a drive today and found my school so that I am sure that I know where I am going on day 1. This was great as I now know what it looks like.

Pushed for time

Oh Dear!

I have just realised that I have not been keeping up with my blog posts for this subject and it is a requirement for Assignment 3. I have had so much happening with my new job and family life that I am even having trouble fitting in my uni work at all.

We are now 4 days out from starting professional experience and I really enjoyed reading Sara’s blog post about her first day on Prac as my first day will be on Tuesday.

Will get my forms together tonight and get organised.

Digital citizenship and digital footprint

I have been working through the Week 8 learning path and I am trying to catch up so I can go into professional experience with nothing else on my plate. I think it is a hugely important thing to make sure that you are a good digital citizen and keep your digital footprint super clean. There will most definitely be parents and students who will search for you online and my opinion is the less they can find the better. Not to mention prospective employers who will be checking out your digital footprint.

I googled my mentor teacher for Professional experience and discovered that she has written a book to assist teachers in the first 5 years in the profession. The book is called ‘Sanity Savers‘ and has tips to equip teachers with the skills required to thrive and survive in the classroom. I have added the link if you would like to check it out. It is really nice to be able to find out things like this before even going to the school…..only in the digital age πŸ™‚

I also think it is extremely important to teach our students that been a good digital citizen is everything in this day and age. We also need to teach them to be cyber safe.

The Connect.Ed website is a great read for everyone.

Checklist – Things to do and prac requirements

I just found this great blog post from TarrynΒ  – Nervous about prac. I am also second guessing my ability and feeling very under equipped for this prac.

Here is my checklist of things I need to do between now and then:

  • Preparation Essay (500 – 1000 Words)
  • Print off Weekly feedback forms, lesson plan template and other important docs
  • Create a folder with all of these documents

Prac teaching requirements:

  • 1/3 of the day in week 1
  • 1/2 of the day in week 2
  • 2/3’s of the day and 1 full day in week 3

I need to gather evidence and lots of it for my eportfolio as my next pracs will be 4th year ones.

I need to submit 5 lesson plans from prac for assignment 3 and a 1000-1500 word essay evaluating my ICT integration and any lesson I learned while on prac.

Now to re-read the learning path for prac requirements and get myself up to date (When the studydesk is accessible again).

Finally……Professional experience placement

Well, I have finally been placed for my professional experience, Raceview State School. I have emailed my site contact and will now wait for a reply. I am really nervous and worried about this prac as I have not done any pracs in a school yet, i received quite a few exemptions so this means I have only had to do a 10 day prac in a toddler room so far. This Early Childhood degree seems to be very odd in so many ways as I will never teach in a day care centre in a room that is below the age of Kindergarten!

Anyway, cannot wait to have this prac done and dusted so I can get some school experience.
